PEACE for Ukraine
Like so many around the world I have watched the news of what is unfolding in Ukraine, and, like many, I sit here feeling helpless as to what we can do about it. However, it occurred to me that while I obviously can’t change the course of events in any way, I could offer a tiny bit of support to Ukrainians around the world who must be feeling crushed, sad, terrified, worried and straight up furious. So I designed this little block to share with you in the hopes that quilters might make something beautiful with it and flood the internet with pictures of their support. It is a simple message: “мир” means “PEACE” in Ukrainian, and the word is imposed on the Ukrainian flag.
The block is 6″ x 4″ – perfect for making a postcard that could be mailed to a Ukrainian friend. It would also be perfect for a mini quilt, zippy pouch or other small project.
The block can be appliquéd onto a bag or jacket as Christine has done below. It’s a great way to advertise your support for Ukrainians in your community while you are out and about.
The templates can also easily be enlarged and used for a pillow, banner or perhaps part of a larger quilt. See Helen’s block below. She enlarged it 300%, added extra flag on the sides and plans to make a 23″x12″ banner out of it to hang in her front window, which is pretty awesome.
Thank you to my fabulous team of testers!
As always I am so grateful to the wonderful human beings in the quilting community. I finished the design at 11:30pm last night and, knowing that I wanted to get this out the pattern out there as soon as possible, I posted a quick request for people in Europe who were just waking up and able to test the pattern to make samples for me to use by morning. It only took a few minutes for these lovely ladies to step up. Look at these amazing pics that I woke up to 8 hours later! So a special thanks to them. I have watermarked each with their Instagram handles, so go and check out their profiles and follow to see what they do with their blocks. I love how this whole project took less than 24 hours to get out in the wild. 💙💛
Please use it to do what you can to get the message of peace and support out there. 🇺🇦🕊
Support charities supporting victims of the war on Ukraine
There are many non-profit organizations that you can support by making a donation in exchange for this free pattern. Search for ones that offer tax receipts in your country. Even small donations add up to big ones. Together we make a difference.
Here’s what I did with my block: I added a little extra fabric on the sides and made a zipper pouch for a friend using my Prism Zippy Pouch pattern.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The pattern is for personal use only – you may not make items for sale with this pattern – unless they are for charity with 100% of the profit going to a cause that supports Ukrainian communities. This pattern may not be copied, reproduced, sold or distributed in any way. While you are welcome to make projects with this pattern as gifts for others, kindly do not share the pattern file with others – each maker must access their own copy from here. Thank you so much for allowing us to use this pattern. Our modern quilt guild here in the Scottish Borders (UK) are making the small quilts in solidarity with our Ukranian “cousins” here in Europe. Thanks again X

Hi Laurie
The best way to share would be to post on Instagram with the hashtag #peaceforukraineblock. There are already a couple hundred pics posted there. And I’m guessing some on Facebook too.
Prayers for peace. Thank you!

What does the MNP stand for?
It is the Ukrainian word for “Peace”. (Their alphabet uses Cyrillic script – so their letters are slightly different from the Roman alphabet that English uses.)
